The Interface Pressure of Viscoelastic Support Surface
Park Kyung-Hee

Abstract
This study was done to evaluate the effects of viscoelastic foam overlay (VEFO) on interface pressure (IP). Fifty-four adult patients (¡Ã19 years) with a Braden Scale score of 16 or less, who used VEFO on top of the standard hospital mattress were included in the study. We measured body-bed IP of VEFO. The mean IP was significantly lower on VEFO with standard hospital mattress than on standard hospital mattress alone (t=8.87, P£¼0.001). In conclusion, the combination of VEFO with standard hospital mattress is more effective than standard hospital mattress. Therefore VEFO is likely to be useful in the prevention of pressure ulcers. Additional research is needed to further characterize the efficacy of VEFO and the effect of preventing pressure ulcers in high-risk populations.
